Clove 丁香
Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & L.M.Perry | Myrtaceae (myrtle family)
Appearance & Aroma
Dried flower buds resembling small rust-brown nails, about 1–2 cm long. The bud consists of a long calyx tube ending in four spreading sepals, with the unopened petals forming a spherical head. Remarkably hard and durable when dried.
Intensely warm, spicy-sweet, and penetrating—one of the most potent aromatic substances in traditional perfumery. Clove’s fragrance is deep, lasting, and unmistakable, with the power to dominate a blend if not balanced.
TCM Properties
- Nature (性 xìng): Warm
- Taste (味 wèi): Pungent (辛 xīn)
- Meridian Tropism (归经 guī jīng): Kidney (肾 shèn), Spleen (脾 pí), Stomach (胃 wèi)
Classical References
Clove entered the Chinese materia medica relatively early, documented in the 《雷公炮炒论》 (Lei Gong Pao Zhi Lun, c. 5th century CE), a seminal text on herb processing methods. By the Tang Dynasty, it was a well-established import from the Moluccas.
Li Shizhen, in the 《本草纲目》, classified clove as a warming aromatic: “丁香辛温纯阳,泄肺温胃,暖腰膝,壮阳事”—pure yang, warming the lungs and stomach, warming the lower back and knees. Its yang warmth makes it a natural complement to Wood’s expansive energy.
Usage in Chinese Herbal Sachets
Clove’s exceptional durability and intense fragrance make it a premium sachet ingredient. A few whole buds can perfume a sachet for months. Its warming, moving nature helps counterbalance cooler herbs in Wood formulas.
Elemental Affinity
While traditionally associated with the Kidney and Spleen meridians, clove’s pungent warmth serves Wood energy by piercing through stagnation—like sunlight through forest canopy. It adds depth and longevity to Wood-element blends.
Custom Blending Ideas
Every constitution is unique. Below are three blend directions—start with these, then adjust to your personal preference. Herbal sachets, like herbal formulas, are best when they are personal.
Focus & Clarity
Clove + Peppermint (薄荷)—clove’s warming focus paired with peppermint’s cooling clarity, for sustained concentration.
Digestive Comfort
Clove + Tangerine Peel (陈皮) + Patchouli (藿香)—a warming, aromatic blend to carry during meals or travel.
Deep Warmth
Clove + Cinnamon (肉桂) + Sandalwood (檀香)—a richly warming formula for cold seasons or those with a chilly constitution.
Safety & Sourcing
Safe in sachet form. Clove oil is highly concentrated and can irritate skin; dried whole buds pose no such risk. The intensity of clove means it should be used sparingly—a little goes a long way.
