Mugwort 艾草 Ài Cǎo

Artemisia argyi H.Lév. & Vaniot | Asteraceae (daisy family)

Appearance & Aroma

Tall, silver-green leaves with deeply lobed margins and a soft, downy underside that catches the light. When dried, the leaves become brittle but retain their distinctive silvery color and potent fragrance for many months.

Earthy, herbaceous, and deeply aromatic—mugwort has a distinctive fragrance that is at once medicinal, warm, and oddly comforting. It is the scent of moxibustion, of traditional healing spaces, of ancient practice made present.

Classical References

Mugwort is among the most ancient herbs in the Chinese pharmacopoeia. The 《黄帝内经》 (Huang Di Nei Jing, c. 200 BCE) describes moxibustion—the burning of mugwort over acupuncture points—in its Ling Shu (Spiritual Pivot) section, establishing a therapeutic lineage of over two millennia.

Li Shizhen, in the 《本草纲目》, wrote that mugwort “can penetrate the meridians and eliminate the hundred diseases” (能通十二经络,而且为百病所用). He noted its pure yang nature: “艾叶,生则微苦太辛,熟则微辛太苦,生温熟热,纯阳也”—raw, it is slightly bitter and highly pungent; processed, slightly pungent and highly bitter; raw it warms, processed it heats—pure yang.

Usage in Chinese Herbal Sachets

Dried mugwort leaves are durable and strongly aromatic, making them a powerful sachet ingredient. Its earthy, medicinal fragrance is not for everyone—but for those who appreciate it, it is deeply grounding and centering. It works best as a supporting herb rather than the dominant note.

Elemental Affinity

Mugwort’s moxibustion tradition places it firmly in the Fire element: it warms, moves, and transforms. In a sachet, it brings this warming, moving quality to the blend, supporting the circulation of qi and the dispelling of cold.

Custom Blending Ideas

Every constitution is unique. Below are three blend directions—start with these, then adjust to your personal preference. Herbal sachets, like herbal formulas, are best when they are personal.

Moxa Comfort

Mugwort + Cinnamon (肉桂) + Clove (丁香)—a warming, yang-nourishing blend for those who tend to feel cold or sluggish.

Earthy Calm

Mugwort + Patchouli (藿香)—two earthy, grounding herbs that create a deeply centering, meditative sachet.

Seasonal Protection

Mugwort + Peppermint (薄荷) + Sandalwood (檀香)—a traditional blend worn during transitional seasons to support the body’s defenses.

Safety & Sourcing

Safe in sachet form. Mugwort is a member of the Asteraceae family; those with ragweed allergies should note this association. Pregnant individuals should avoid close, prolonged contact with strong mugwort preparations.
