Patchouli 藿香 Huò Xiāng

Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth. | Lamiaceae (mint family)

Appearance & Aroma

Broad, soft, serrated leaves with a distinctive musky fragrance that develops depth as they dry. Fresh leaves have little scent; the characteristic patchouli aroma emerges during the curing process, becoming richer over time.

Deep, earthy, musky, and complex—patchouli is one of the most distinctive and grounding fragrances in traditional perfumery. Its scent is heavy, lingering, and profoundly centering. It has the quality of rich soil after rain: dark, alive, and deeply comforting.

TCM Properties

  • Nature (性 xìng): Warm
  • Taste (味 wèi): Pungent (辛 xīn)
  • Meridian Tropism (归经 guī jīng): Spleen (脾 pí), Stomach (胃 wèi), Lung (肺 fèi)

Classical References

Patchouli was first formally documented in the 《名医别录》 (Ming Yi Bie Lu, c. 6th century CE), a supplement to the Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing compiled by Tao Hongjing. It was noted for its ability to transform dampness and harmonize the middle—qualities that remain central to its clinical use today.

Li Shizhen, in the 《本草纲目》, described patchouli’s mechanism with characteristic insight: “辛微温,入手足太阴…芳香之气助脾胃”—the aromatic qi assists the Spleen and Stomach. He recognized that fragrance itself is medicinal, and patchouli’s particular aromatic signature directly addresses the Earth element’s vulnerability to dampness and stagnation.

Usage in Chinese Herbal Sachets

Dried patchouli leaves are durable and intensely fragrant, making them an excellent sachet base. Their earthy, grounding aroma acts as a foundation for lighter, more volatile herbs. A small amount of patchouli can add remarkable depth and longevity to any blend. It is particularly suited to sachets intended for meditation, grounding, and emotional centering.

Elemental Affinity

Patchouli is quintessentially Earth. Its deep, damp-transforming nature directly supports the Spleen’s function, while its grounding fragrance draws awareness into the body. For Earth constitutions who tend toward worry and overthinking, patchouli offers the wisdom of stillness—the body’s quiet strength.

Custom Blending Ideas

Every constitution is unique. Below are three blend directions—start with these, then adjust to your personal preference. Herbal sachets, like herbal formulas, are best when they are personal.

Grounded Focus

Patchouli + Sandalwood (檀香)—the classic meditation pair, deeply grounding and centering.

Damp-Transforming

Patchouli + Tangerine Peel (陈皮) + Peppermint (薄荷)—for those who feel heavy, sluggish, or foggy, this blend clears and moves.

Earth Anchor

Patchouli + Mugwort (艾草) + Cinnamon (肉桂)—a warming, deeply grounding Earth formula for stability and inner strength.

Safety & Sourcing

Safe in sachet form. Patchouli’s fragrance is polarizing: those who love it adore it; those who don’t find it overwhelming. Use it as a supporting note in blends intended for general appeal.
