Rose 玫瑰花
Rosa rugosa Thunb. (and related species) | Rosaceae (rose family)
Appearance & Aroma
Deep pink to magenta blooms with layers of velvety petals. In Chinese medicine, the unopened buds (Méi Guī Huā) are preferred over fully opened flowers, as they concentrate the plant’s qi before it disperses.
Sweet, floral, with a subtle honeyed warmth. More delicate than European rose varieties, but with a lingering depth that unfolds slowly. Dried buds retain fragrance for weeks when properly stored.
TCM Properties
- Nature (性 xìng): Warm
- Taste (味 wèi): Sweet (甘 gān), slightly bitter (苦 kǔ)
- Meridian Tropism (归经 guī jīng): Liver (肝 gān) and Spleen (脾 pí)
Classical References
Rose has a distinguished place in Chinese medicine. The 《本草纲目》 praised rose for its ability to regulate qi and resolve depression without dispersing proper qi: “和血,行血,理气”—harmonizing blood, moving blood, regulating qi.
In the 《食物本草》 (Shi Wu Ben Cao), a Ming-dynasty dietary therapy text, rose was noted for its gentle action on the Liver: “柔肝醒胃,流气和血”—softening the Liver and awakening the Stomach. This makes it an ideal Wood herb: it moves without breaking, soothes without numbing.
Usage in Chinese Herbal Sachets
Rose buds make an elegant sachet ingredient, prized as much for their visual beauty as their fragrance. Their aroma is more subtle than peppermint or clove, so pair them with stronger herbs for balance. Their real gift in a sachet is the feeling they carry—of tenderness, warmth, and emotional openness.
Elemental Affinity
Rose’s connection to Wood is through its affinity for the Liver meridian. Where Wood energy becomes rigid or frustrated, rose gently loosens—not by force, but by reminding the body what softness feels like. It is the diplomat of the Wood herb family.
Custom Blending Ideas
Every constitution is unique. Below are three blend directions—start with these, then adjust to your personal preference. Herbal sachets, like herbal formulas, are best when they are personal.
Romantic Calm
Rose + Lavender (熊衣草)—two floral traditions meet in a deeply calming, emotionally supportive blend.
Qi-Smoothing
Rose + Tangerine Peel (陈皮)—a classic Liver-Spleen harmonizing pair, ideal for those who feel tension in both mood and digestion.
Nourishing Beauty
Rose + Angelica (白芷) + Sandalwood (檀香)—a formula for nourishing blood and calming spirit, carrying the energy of quiet self-care.
Safety & Sourcing
Safe for most people. Choose organic, unsprayed buds for sachets worn near the skin. Rose petals may crumble over time; using whole buds extends the sachet’s life.
