Sandalwood 檀香 Tán Xiāng

Santalum album L. | Santalaceae (sandalwood family)

Appearance & Aroma

Pale golden to light brown heartwood, dense and close-grained, with a smooth, almost waxy texture. The finest sandalwood comes from mature trees (30+ years) where the aromatic heartwood has fully developed. Even small chips release fragrance for years.

Rich, woody, creamy, and meditative—sandalwood’s fragrance is one of the most revered in the world. It is slow-releasing, never sharp, deepening rather than fading. Its scent has been described as the olfactory equivalent of deep meditation: still, present, and timeless.

Classical References

Sandalwood entered the Chinese pharmacopoeia through trade routes linking India and China. The 《日华子本草》 (Ri Hua Zi Ben Cao, 10th century CE) documented its aromatic properties and its ability to calm the mind and settle the stomach.

Li Shizhen, in the 《本草纲目》, described sandalwood’s qi-regulating action: “调气”—it regulates qi. This seemingly simple description belies sandalwood’s profound capacity to settle disturbance and restore flow, whether in the digestive system, the respiratory system, or the mind itself. The 《黄帝内经》’s teaching that the Heart houses the shen (spirit) finds resonance in sandalwood’s ability to quiet the mind through the breath—a bridge between the physical and the spiritual.

Usage in Chinese Herbal Sachets

Sandalwood is among the most durable sachet ingredients in existence. Properly stored chips or powder can retain their fragrance for years. Its slow, steady release provides a consistent aromatic presence. As a base note, it anchors more volatile herbs and adds meditative depth to any blend. It is especially suited to sachets intended for stillness practice, sleep, or quiet contemplation.

Elemental Affinity

Sandalwood’s slow, deep, meditative quality aligns it with Water’s introspective nature. Where Water energy seeks depth over breadth, stillness over motion, sandalwood offers both. Its ability to still the mind while keeping the spirit present makes it Water’s most essential aromatic ally.

Custom Blending Ideas

Every constitution is unique. Below are three blend directions—start with these, then adjust to your personal preference. Herbal sachets, like herbal formulas, are best when they are personal.

Meditation

Sandalwood + Lavender (熊衣草)—the definitive stillness blend, for meditation, sleep, or quiet contemplation.

Deep Water

Sandalwood + Patchouli (藿香) + Mugwort (艾草)—a profoundly grounding Water formula for those who feel scattered or unmoored.

Quiet Clarity

Sandalwood + Peppermint (薄荷) + Clove (丁香)—mental clarity without agitation: the mind becomes still and sharp, like a mountain lake.

Safety & Sourcing

Safe in sachet form. Genuine Santalum album is increasingly rare and expensive; many commercial “sandalwood” products are other woods or synthetic fragrances. Source from reputable suppliers.
