Tangerine Peel 陈皮
Citrus reticulata Blanco | Rutaceae (citrus family)
Appearance & Aroma
The dried mature peel of tangerine or mandarin orange, aged for months to years. The best Chén Pí comes from Xinhui, Guangdong, where the peel is sun-dried and stored until it develops a deep, rich aroma. The older, the more prized—as the saying goes, “千年人参,百年陈皮” (a thousand-year ginseng, a hundred-year tangerine peel).
Warm, sweet, citrusy, with a mellow depth that emerges with age. Fresh peel is bright and zesty; properly aged Chén Pí develops complex notes of wood, spice, and dried fruit. Its fragrance is steady and sustaining rather than sharp.

Classical References
The 《神农本草经》 lists citrus peel among the superior-grade substances—those safe for long-term use that “nourish life and correspond to Heaven.” Its reliability across centuries of clinical use is remarkable.
Li Shizhen, in the 《本草纲目》, summarized Chén Pí’s genius with precision: “苦能泄能燥,辛能散,温能和…同补药则补,同泄药则泄,同升药则升,同降药则降”—it follows the direction of whichever herbs it accompanies: with tonics it tonifies, with purgatives it purges, with ascending herbs it ascends, with descending herbs it descends. This adaptability makes it the perfect harmonizer in any formula.
Usage in Chinese Herbal Sachets
Dried tangerine peel is one of the most durable sachet ingredients available. Properly dried and stored peel can retain its fragrance for a year or more. Its warm, grounding citrus note provides an excellent foundation for more volatile herbs, anchoring the blend and extending its life.
Elemental Affinity
Though classified under Earth by many, Chén Pí’s primary function—regulating qi—is fundamentally Wood in nature. It keeps energy moving smoothly, preventing the stagnation that Wood constitutions are prone to. Its warmth also supports the Spleen, embodying the Wood-nourishes-Earth dynamic of the Five Element cycle.
Custom Blending Ideas
